I have a 2008 mazda that i changed the thermostat and water pump on. The car will idle all day in nuetral or park and stay in operating range. I can rev the car and hold 2000-3000rpms and the car does great. As soon as its put in reverse or drive, the temperature goes up. Thoughts?

Does the temp actually go up or is it just the gauge SHOWING that it gets hot?
Does it get hot and boil over when driving it??
First thing I would do is a compression test..

This is all just by watching the needle. I was thinking next I'd just replace the sensor just to rule it out. It's only $20.

The A/C starts blowing hot when the needle goes up so I do believe the engine really is getting hot. It's a 4cyl but it has plenty of power. It dosnt have a miss.

That does sound like a real overheating issue..
A bad head gasket can also leak combustion gases from the combustion chamber into the coolant..
Typically, unless it's really bad, it will do exactly as you described.. be just fine until you put it in gear and put a load on it.. then it will get hot.

Wouldn't it do it when I rev it to 3000rpms for 5 minutes in neutral?

I was originally thinking it may be a hose but I put the garden hose them and they seem fine. They feel strong and don't collapse easy.

But that is not putting a LOAD on the engine..
Have you run a compression check or a leak down test?

It burped and now it's running good. I checked the fluid and it dropped. I drove it around the neighborhood and to the parts store and it's fine now.

When you say burped, I guess it had air in the coolant system?
