OK, I'm fixing a computer for someone I know. He just dropped it off and said it wouldn't turn on at all. I diagnosed it and decided it was the power supply and ordered a new one. Now here's my problem, one I haven't encountered before. With my spare PSU hooked up to the computer it boots up just fine. When the new PSU is hooked up to the computer the CPU fans spins up then stops, the power light flashes once, and the PSU fan just jerks once. But when I take the new PSU and hook it up to my HTPC it boots up with no issues. Same power cord. WTF am I missing?
Reseat all the cards that are in slots and reseat all the memory modules... If that doesn't help... it may be a bad processor.
Kind of weirdly worded, let me try again. It works fine with my spare PSU Doesn't work with the new PSU But the new PSU works in a different computer.
look at the colors of the wires on the plugs from the new PSU and your spare PSU... See if any of them are reversed/different on the new PSU...
Sounds like an incorrect power connection to the CPU to me. Make sure of the orientation of the plug. I've seen some that were not keyed and could be plugged in either way.
