I received the toys yesterday and got so excited that I was off work early enough to install it I got way ahead of myself. So it isn't the perfect "How to" but it is something.
The part that is missing is the photo's of hooking up the units harness to the factory adapter harness. I used some pretty cool connectors. I'll see if I can get some pictures on here of them. Anyway I got it all connected up. Followed all the color coded wires which in my case worked. Crutchfields directions stated not to trust it, I gambled.
So here is all the stuff from Crutchfield. I really like them and the price isn't that much more since they give you all the adapters and harnesses for free, plus free tech support.
First things first, disconnect the negative lead from the battery. Safety first and you don't want to fry anything.
Like I said I got ahead of myself. I pulled the plastic trim off the dash. You just got to be careful not to break any of the tabs and make sure you put he shift lever all the way down. Then it is easy access to the stock head unit. Just pull down on the tabs on each side of the unit and slide it out. Unhook the harness and antenna and your good to go. So I went back and took pictures just for you guys.
Here is the components as they got stuffed in the dash. Note the connectors on the wire harness.
They added this neat USB connector holder to keep it from coming apart inside the dash.
Next I went and took out the factory tape deck. I never used it the entire time I owned the truck. I figured it was the best place to put the IPod. Just life up the door on the storage compartment, take out the two screws and the cover comes right off.
I then just pulled on two tabs just like the radio and the cassette player came right out.
From hear I stuffed the blue tooth adapter in the dash to the left of the head unit and the amp to the right of the head unit and ran the USB cable down to the cassette area. Hooked up all the leads to the head unit and slid it in. Nice tight fit. I put the dash trim back on and installed the cover over the cassette player area.
I forgot to mention I fished the microphone for the Bluetooth over the speedometer and up the same place as the Scangauge II lead.
From there I fished it under the headliner and over to the center console. I then took the OnStar mic out and mounted the Bluetooth mic.
That is pretty much it. Oh I did mess up in that not reading all the directions like I should have I found out that the factory harness hook up isn't quite powerful enough. If I turn it up really loud it shuts down. It is supposed to be hooked to a 15 amp circuit. So I either go back in and adjust the amp or I run a separate power wire. Since I really do not listen to it really loud, "I'm getting old", I'm just going to adjust the amp. I kind of have to pull it all back out anyway because I forgot to write down the serial numbers of the blue tooth, amp and head unit.
Good thing it is easy to take out.
The rear door speakers were cake. You just take two screws out of the arm rest and pop the door cover off. Just be careful again not to break the tabs like I did. Note in the picture of the broken tab.
Then I installed the new Infinity speakers using self tapping screws. Pretty easy. Crutchfield even sent speaker wire adapters so I didn't have to splice anything.
That is about it. From start to finish it was three hours and about 20lbs of fat sweated off. I wish I could have pulled the truck into the AC part of the garage where I at least did all the wire connections.
