Two years ago we built a .060 over 454, for one of mud trucks. Never did get to race it much the first year. Last summer we ran it a few times. Has less than 20 passes on it. Before our last race, we put a .640 lift Solid Howards cam in. And it went all to hell.
We broke the cam in like it should. Ran fine,We tested it very little, Loaded it on the trailer and Unloaded it once we got there. We swapped the plugs out for a new set, And it sat in the pits all night. (This is my buddys truck) When it was his turn to run, By the time he drove it to the line, it wasn't right. Thought it might have been elevation change or something. But, Once off the line it just snapped and popped back, wouldn't run for crap. And had weak fuel pressure. So we loaded it up.
The next morning we found someone had poured beer, (Or someting that smelled like beer) Down in the fuel tank. The fuel cap was not latched correctly either.
This is what we found. There was something in the whole fuel system, Like sticks or dirt or something. I could never really figure out what it was. It was sorta like crystalized, but looks like rust to me. (There is no metal in our fuel system)
Once we replaced or cleaned everything in the fuel system. We got it fired back up. As we was letting it warm up, It lunched a push rod.
There was a piece we did not find. So we decided to just tear it down. These are the small push rods, Never should have been with that big of a cam, i don't think. I don't know why we did not upgrade these from the beginning.
We pulled the engine and it has sat since summer. Saturday we finally tore it down.
These are the bearings. Rod and i think there is a main in there too.... The bearings still look like new, Minus those cuts... So i think the damage i see just happened, With the screw up. But,people i've talked to say the bearings just look too tight.
The block and crank look** good. Its at the machine shop right now. Getting checked.
It has press fit speed pro .100 dome pistons. And one of the pistons feel like it has drag on it, like all the other pistons will flop back and forth easily. And the hypereutectic coating looks to be wearing off? I'm not sure if its supposed too or not.
The cam and cam bearings were roached. It was brand new, 2 passes, and 2 test runs. Was only in the engine for 3 days.
Timing chain was great!!
Figured i would throw this up and see what you guys think. Its long winded, but ..
Will be building this back soon, also. I'm sure i will have more questions about that. Cam choice, stepping up to a better set of 781 heads also(They are in the machine shop now, getting 2.19 valves.)...And a bigger dome piston.
