Tried to buy the splash guard for the inside of that fender (it was missing) and Rock Auto had it for about $25.00
And $83.00 for the fwonking shipping... I am so done with Rock Auto. I know they're forum sponsors, and I'm trying to throw some business their way as a thank you for that, but...
Drove it through a massive puddle on the shoulder of the road, trying to get around stalled traffic so I could turn right at the corner and wiped out the alternator... or so I thought. Right after I did it (with water spraying pretty high), all my electronics in the cab went haywire and I...
One of these days I need to find out just how much fuel my truck actually holds. Stock C3500 diesels with dual tanks that year were supposed to have 21 in one and 18 in the other, but since mine was a cab & chassis with a utility back added it doesn't have the standard tanks. I've never run it...
A lot has changed since I did this stuff for a living in the 90s, but one trick I had back then for dealing with vacuum lines was to replace them with silicone airline tubing from the pet store. It's sold in the aquarium section and worked quite well for vacuum lines. Never dried out or got...
Just found out three things:
It was not a "Made in USA" Whelen module that sells for $60.00
It was a "Made in USA" Axixtech module that sells for $105.00
It had a 5 year warranty, and the company is going to replace both of them.
:wookie:
Pulled off one of my LED warning lights that had developed a leak and shorted out, only to find this underneath:
Burnt Paint par KJ4VOV, on ipernity
This wasn't some cheap shit Chinese crap either, it was a Made in USA Whelen module that sells for $60
I'm a bit pissed at the moment. :fume...
Due for one. Time to head to Wally World. I can't do it myself for the price they charge. $35 for 7.5 qts of Rotella, filter (okay, it's a Fram so not the best), lube and disposal. It'd cost me that much just to buy the oil & filter.
Okay then, make that your big purchase for this project and stick a good aftermarket electronic ignition in there. You'll improve your reliability, improve your mileage, and improve your performance, all in one shot.
You could do a lot worse than sticking a 4BT in there. They're good, strong, reliable engines for the kind of things you want the truck to do. And there's a ton of things you can do to 'em to get more out of them. Put enough time, effort and a bit of cash into it and you could be rolling coal...
Yes, really. Trying to cobble together a GM HEI system for it out of junkyard parts has too much potential to turn into a royal PITA for you. A system like that is fine for guys that like to tinker with stuff, but not so fine on a vehicle that you need to be reliable and as a daily driver.
Pop the 318 out then and drop in a 4BT or 6BT instead then. You'll get decent fuel mileage and it'll pull a trailer all day long like nobody's business.
"Need" is a funny word... Yeah, it doesn't need a 4bbl, and more horsepower and more torque. Hell, it doesn't need anything more than stock. For that matter, it doesn't need a V8 either. A 225 slant 6 would power the truck just as well, and would let you accomplish all the chores you needed...
If your only goal was to stick a 4bbl on, yeah, it can work, but it's not going to do much for your performance, and may even lower performance. It is, after all, still a stock intake, and that q-jet is probably a little too much carb for your application.
It's like any other part of life, some folks like some things and some other folks don't. I was ASE certified back when I had my shop, and I'm not against it. Hell, I did it on my own car.
I realize that budget is probably making this choice for you, but I also know you'd be much happier in the long run with either an Accel, Mallory or MSD setup in there, and those are the only ignition upgrades I can really recommend for this project. Yes, you can make a GM HEI work, and yes...
