Before the firewall sees color, had a spot of rust that needed to be fixed ..
Had to cut a panel in order to gain access for the repair ..

Wasn't a large rust spot, but in time it would had grown ..
Above photo shows a patch that I made to weld in ..

Saved the piece that was cut out to weld back in once the patch was installed ..

This is the finish, not doing a super nice job on the repair cause this panel is not seen due to it being behind the fender ..

The repair cured what little rust the truck has ...
Not all that bad for being 72 years old ..

I think the repair looks good. Good to see you post on the build again.

Back to engine work, I'm keeping the old huge GM direct drive starter.
Worked super well on the mouse motor ..
Had the thought of freshening up since it's got a few years on it ..

That endeavor went well with finding a cast iron housing that GM made for Hi-Performance big blocks in the late 60's and early 70's ...

1778725040242.png

Direct replacement for the aluminum nose ..
Had to hunt down the bendix fork cause the aluminum nose fork is different ...

1778725331590.png

Found a fork from a starter that was used on a 58 283 ci Impala ..
It was worn some as you can see in the above photo ..
Got a Nos fork coming from eBay ..

1778725734197.png

Replace the brushes, bushings and got a new solenoid ..
Cleaned up the armature and did all the checks to it ..

1778726020025.png

Starter worked good as new, but .....
The rubber grommet was about done ..
Since my hands are into it I hunted a new one down ..

1778726340739.png

Being the starter is over 50 years old, no part store had it ..
They said it was a vintage part ..
Made a trip 10 miles up the road to a old starter/alt. rebuild shop and that was a adventure ...

1778726728239.png

After all that fuss was done & over netted a Hi-Po old school GM starter ..

1778726930333.png

Waiting for the eBay fork to show up..
Starter will be done, done, done !

Got enough leftover parts to build another one ..

Awesome! I loved it back in the day when parts would inter change on just about everything from a 283 up to a 350. Those old starters were a bit on the heavy side.

Yeah, good thing it's four wheel drive and 500 cubic inches ...
It'll help to pack around all that weight .. Lol

About the interchangeable parts ...
Close but like the solenoid fork, some difference in design makes for swapping around parts most difficult ..

Shoot, the starter bolts are even different between the cast iron and the aluminum noses ...

These are ARP's ..

Got a set for the aluminum nose starter, now that a new ballgame is in town, gotta get another set that fits the cast iron nose ..
