Even the auto-shifts are 12 speed

6 speeds is enough IMO for cars/light trucks.

Depends on the power to weight ratio...

4 speed on my truck is just fine, as long as I'm not towing...

Provided it doesn't sacrifice reliability and driveability, it doesn't really matter how many gears there is...

Just think how often it is going to be shifting back and forth at highway speeds, every time you start up a little rise in the road...
I wouldn't like that at all...
