What *I* would like to see is America to not be sucking off the teet of OPEC.. If that means more production here, so be it. If that means higher fuel economy standards to reduce how much oil we need to be from outside source, so be it..

I don't see OPEC deciding "oil prices aren't high enough, let's cut output, to drive prices up, so we can make more money" as the free market in action. :dunno:

It's not heaven . . . it's Iowa!
So, are we against high gas prices or for them?

There's a lot of bitching here about expensive gasoline but then we tout the free market and how great America and capitalism is.

We all hate $4/gallon but then we also hate the "hipsters" who are complaining about it and calling out those who are actually benefiting from it.

Which one is it?

1.) Free enterprise, Go 'Merica!
2.) Free enterprise, except for gas! Go 'Merica, shut up hippies!!!

:werd: x 1000

That and that hipster bastard writing the article is getting paid. Just because he's not making as much doesn't make it not capitalism.

THIS. We need to produce our own oil and any other oil alternatives that are feasible. I understand that it's not as simple as us using only US oil. But the laws of supply and demand (if we'd have enough quantity) would drive those prices down.

OPEC? We import more oil from Canada than OPEC.

Even with higher MPG cars, the supply can simply be cut further to create more scarcity and continue driving the prices up.

There's a freaking surplus right now though so I'm not sure output really has jack shit to do with it. Also, Exxon/Mobil, Conoco Phillips, etc. are not OPEC, they are big business making big bucks. That's the free market in action.

I'm no economist, but it seems like the price of oil is artificially higher than it should be. The fact that *they* can cut the supply is the problem I was referring to. :dunno: If *they* can cut the supply to raise the price, I'd like somebody else to be able to increase the supply

I'm 100% FOR free markets. No regulation or governmental interference. Commodities such as gasoline will reach a natural point where people are comfy buying it and companies are making good money off of it.

Everybody wants everything for less than cost in this country. Anybody wanna guess why everything is made in China or some other emerging labor market? Americans are too fucking stupid to realize that they are causing their own job issues here (but they still want everything at or below cost).

WTF?

Supply is not an issue right now though yet prices are still high.

It's easy to blame OPEC (read: people not like us) but the truth is the oil companies have no desire to lower prices because people keep buying their product and they keep getting filthy rich from it. The manipulation of gas prices in this country is more from internal sources than external.
