Now I have a damn oil leak too!

So I checked my oil today and I was a quart low. I check it every 1000 miles or so, and for that much oil to be gone in 1,000 miles I knew something was wrong. I looked all over and I see no oil, but then I climb under the truck and I see a big ass mess all over the rear half of the oil pan and the filter,and all over the bottom of the front of the transmission. I can't tell for sure where its coming from. Is it common for an oil pan gasket or a rear main seal to leak on these engines? Its a 2001 Chevy 5.3 liter.

Check the oil filter gasket, and check the oil filter for tightness. I've seen them loosen.

Yes, I just did a minute ago. Its pretty tight.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but if it's something that happened suddenly, I'd probably check the oil filter and see if it was tight.

While you are there check the pan bolts and make sure they are snug.

Next, pull the inspection cover at the bell housing and see if the oil is coming from inside (rear main) or outside (possible pan gasket)

Spray the whole area down with brake cleaner and get all of the oil off then fire it up and see what you get.
