I had tried with my hand held AutoXray and saw nothing at all, connected EFI Live and bam there it was. So yeah it takes a good quality reader to see those codes.

The 3 that I have done have been on '01 and '02 models, my Tahoe being one of them.

I do not recall what the code ID was. I was not aware of the issue being resolved in '03.

Good stuff!

I wish I had the OTC reader then, that I have now!

Odds are you are right about the encoder sensor, Jarrod. There is lots of talk on several forums about the sensor showing wear and getting gummed up with oil.

If I would have kept my first one and cleaned it up I would bet that it could have been re-used. The oil and grit on the contacts were skewing the readings but there was really no other damage. I would be willing to take it out and just clean it next time just to see, I mean if it didn't work I wouldn't be out any money only an hour or so of time.

Okay, I started to get the Service 4WD messages frequently, so I finally replaced the encoder sensor. Easy job, but fast-foward less than a week, and I'm getting the message again.

Guessing now would be a good time to try to pull codes?

Hate to say it but the next item that could be toast is the Transfer Case Control Module. It's also several hundred dollars to replace.

Get the codes pulled first.

Damn, I guess servicing these 4x4's is one reason I've never owned one. Hope you get it figured out Kyle.
