Ok, I need some input from you guys.

My friend just had her 2000 Tiburon overheat on the highway, and the engine is toast according to the shop it's sitting at (I haven't seen the car, I still want to take a look at it and see what's up).

She's going to buy a new car this summer anyway, and I'm trying to figure out what the best way to proceed is.

Current blue-book on the car (with a good engine ) is about $2500.

Options:

1) Sell car as is, probably for no more than a grand.

2) Donate it for a tax break, not sure how much that would be.

3) Replace the engine. I found a couple in the area for between $200 and $350, I could do the work with my friends for essentially free (we like working on shit, and it's summer ), then sell the car, say for 2 grand.

For a car that's worth so little, I think just cutting losses and ditching it will probably be the best option, but I figured I'd ask you guys what you thought.

I'd be tempted to say just sell it for what can be gotten out of it and move up her time-table for the 'next' car.. But, if you (she) could put $350 or so into and net an extra grand or more, that'd be kind of hard to walk away from.. IF it can be done for so little.. :dunno:

Is it paid for? If she can get by with you helping out for under $800 then that would work out for the better.

Scrap it, donate it or sell it outright.

I'd not stick on cent into it were it me.

Yes, I believe it's paid for (can't imagine it's not, it's a cheap car that she's had a while).

I'd do the work for the cost of pizza/beer/gas, so labor really isn't an issue at all.

Hell, I could even buy the car off her, replace the engine, and sell it if she doesn't want to fix it.

If you want to buy it and flip it yourself, that's a different story. If you have the time and the desire, go for it.

Yeah I'm just waiting to see what her and her parents decide.

It's doubtful that I'll be involved in any way, but I figured I'd ask anyway.
