I have had blowouts before and was told it was from rotating the tires to the other side of the car. They said that once a tire starts its life rolling, it needs to roll in that same direction. Reversing the rolling direction by switching it to the other side of the vehicle supposedly can cause the belts in the tire to fatigue and separate, causing a blowout. Several tire shops told me that. However, I can honestly say I have only had blowouts when I had Pep Boys tires, Cornell I think they were. :dunno:

I just looked at the owners manual for my Caddy and my truck...
Both say it is OK to swap sides...

I've never heard of anyone having problems. I'm pretty sure everyowner's manual says to do it.

From this ^^^ diagram from TireRack, I've been doing it wrong. I've been doing "C" and I guess I should be doing "A".

This is what you'd have to do in letter "E" since you have two different types of tire.

I rotate tires, and always have. I get super mileage out of them. Stories about keeping the same direction are myths.

Here's my caveat:

I did have a set of 10 ply radials on one of my 2500s that I only rotated front to back every summer, and used snow tires in the winter. I hauled a VERY heavy camper on this one. Anyhow, I put 30K on these tires going only one direction, and then decided to start normal pattern rotations at about year 4. I had one come apart, and was "told" that I should have started the rotations sooner. I don't know how much truth there is to that, but I now do it every 5K (every oil change), and my tires last a very, very long time.

I've always rotated according to the owners manual with no issues and I get good life out of most of my tires.

Scott, I guess that makes more sense. Since you went 30k without changing the direction, it seems a little more plausible.

I don't rotate my tires - ever. My truck has 20K on the clock and I have never rotated the tires. In fact, none of them have ever been off of the truck in 3.5 years.

They rotate enough when I drive it.
