Some vehicles are preserved as original simply because they are old and unique. 81 RX7s are not just everywhere anymore. Dropping a boat anchor V8 into the engine bay is pretty caveman like anyway. I sure as hell wouldn't do it. Why kill the dynamics of a 2300 pound car? Makes no sense to me. This car is built for a light - high revving engine. It's not made for a low reving torque engine. You'd need to build a cage and do a lot of chassis work for that... and all of the extra weight would ruin the fun of the car. If I wanted a Camaro, I'd buy a Camaro.

I understand what you want to do with the car and don't want to change the engine. but an LS1/t56 combo is only gonna be around 100lbs more than what is in there now. They are pretty light.

Well, we can argue weight all you like but the rotary / 5 speed is a LOT lighter than that... however, the car just isn't designed for the torque of a V8. The unibody would self destruct. I've seen LS engines poked into many different vehicles. Some had some sound engineering and some were simply transplanted in by rednecks. A few hundred additional pounds in the nose of such a light car would make a huge difference in the handling. In a light car, simple moves like moving the battery to the rear can actually alter handling.

Who says we have to argue. I prefer a friendly discussion. :D All my sources (rx7 forums) say the 12A with accessories and gearbox runs close to 375lbs. and a complete LS1 with t56 runs anywhere from 450-490lbs. You know I'm just discussing for discussion sake.
