Transmission fluid, what's your running temp?

Just was wondering what everyone's transmission fluid temp is running for just the average driving around and interstate use. Ever since I installed my Scangauge II I have a better reading on the fluid temp and mine runs at 177 degrees on average. To me that seems a little high. I'm considering installing a larger cooler. :dunno:

Thoughts?

When I had my Denali cluster in, mine was usually between 175 and 190. Usually hovering around 180 though. I hear that most peoples transmission usually runs about 10-15 degrees cooler than the coolant, and my coolant is usually between 205 and 210, so I guess thats about right. :dunno:

It's not heaven . . . it's Iowa!
I have the trans temp in the DIC, so I don't always monitor it. :dunno:

But I was pretty loaded down and driving in town, and didn't seem to get that high. I'm thinking maybe 190°. And that was on the second trip of the day. Normal driving or cruising down the interstate is more like 175° or something.

Thanks though, now I'm going to be watching that temp all the time :fume:

Mine was pretty much the same. At it worst, when I REALLY got on it, it would barely get to 190. Most of the time was right at 180, and would go as low as 175 on a long stretch of highway with the cruise on.

I should have searched it before I posted.

I found that 175 degrees F is normal. Here is one site that talks about transmission temperature.

I've yet to exceed 170 during this summer heat (100-104) lately. Most of the time it's at 162 or 163.

Cooler is not always better. I've read that continued operation under 150 degrees is almost as bad as running high temperatures. I'd bet the fluid is designed to operate as designed at a certain temp. Mine runs 170 - 190 on a good hot day, depending on load. Highest I ever saw was 210 pulling my boat in really hilly terrain, but that was only for a few minutes.

Unloaded I usually run in the 170-180 range. Loaded it is usually closer to 190. I have never seen it over 195. Not saying it hasn't got there, but not when I am monitoring.
