"I don't think they're trying to make it more competitive," Earnhardt said. "I like the idea of going to a smaller motor and allowing us to engineer with that package, instead of choking down what we currently have with a plate. I think choking a motor down with a plate is the easiest way to go and the laziest way to go."

He is saying that because its happening either way. I agree its lazy to choke down an engine. I dont like that they are reducing tho....

Are they talking about reducing horsepower at superspeedways only or every track? If it's superspeedways only, I say go for it. Can't hurt the quality of racing that fans are subjected to at these two tracks. Let's be honest, the restrictor plates were a quick fix after Bobby Allison damn near parked his Buick in the grandstands at Dega 27 years ago. They just never figured an easier way to slow the cars down back then. Then came the rolling over when the cars got sideways, the invention of roof flaps, blades etc happened, yet the plates pretty much stayed unchanged. NASCAR has changed, yet the restrictor plate pretty much is unchanged almost 30 years later. If reducing power is what it takes to make Nascar happy and keep the driver's and fans safe, so be it. My solution has always been to move the grandstands back 100ft, reinforce the catch fences and take the damn plates off and let em race, but these drivers today are pussies and that will never happen...

IF what they're going to do will get rid of "stand on it all the way around the track / it takes two laps on an over 2 mile track to get up to full speed / pack racing bullshit!" at the super speedways without slowing things down TOO much at the shorter tracks, I say go for it!

You're probably right, though. They're doing it, regardless of who says what. So, if the drivers get in on the conversation early, maybe they can influence things towards the "better" alternative. :dunno:

They've been setting new speed records at just about every track they've gone to this year. So, I'm sure this isn't "just" for super speedways. I haven't heard enough about it, though, to be sure. I just can't imagine them coming up with a different engine package "just" for Talledega and Daytona, though.

"My" solution on those two tracks is to drop the banking some, so drivers "have" to let off in the corners. If they HAVE to let off in the corners, you can give them more throttle response on the straight-aways.

Flat on the floor, dragging the brake some for lap after lap after lap doesn't seem too much like "racing" to me. :dunno:

Formula 1 has changed engine sizes, types, and designs many times. V6, V10, V12, Turbo, Non Turbo.... Each time the teams seize the opportunity and the cars are just as fast as ever. Not sure what NASCAR will do, but I'd bet the results are similar.
