I noticed this a few weeks ago. I thought it may have been cause by the loading and unloading of kegs. But there are no scratches on the tailgate cap, in those areas.

The inner metal piece of the tailgate is bowing <---all I can think to explain it.

My questions are:

Has anyone ever seen this happen? (I don't think it was caused by anything loading or unloading, as far as I can tell. :dunno: )

However it may have happened I need to fix it - How the heck do I get the cap off the tailgate? Does that just snap on and how easy is it to break whatever is holding it on? (The metal has separated. I need to pull the cap, try to straighten it out, then put the cap back on, without breaking it?)

I am at a loss and I refuse to take it to a body shop! :jester:

3M tape, maybe?

As for how the bend happened... I'm clueless.

If the tailgate cap is like the 10th gens then it just pops on there.

Only time I've ever seen that happen is from loading and unloading damage. Very odd.

I've seen that happen before when something came down hard on the tailgate. You may not remember but I am sure it was something heavy that crashed there.

I remember allowing a heavy eight foot log crashing down on my old Z71 and it warped the bed rail a little.

Just take a piece of 2x4 and a hammer, and gently beat it back into place.

That's what I'd try first :D

Maybe you had a tailgating party, and a lot of big people sat on it.

Yea I know, but still... the idea is there..lol.

Shanin, I popped my cap off of mine. It is just held in with clips, BUT you may want to be more careful than I was. Alot of the clips broke. They sell those caps on E-bay pretty cheap though. I haul alot of crap in my truck and my tailgate did not do that. I have had alot of ppl sit on it, wood dropped on it etc etc. That is just plain weird.

Thanks everyone. While I'm not sure how this happened, I need to get it fixed before the bed gets sprayed.

I am going to try and get it straightened out this weekend when it gets a bath. Hopefully I can without removing the cap. :dunno:

Looks to me like the metal is reacting to a slight bow in the tailgate. Possibly from loading something heavy?
