Been a long time coming and once the solenoids get reliable it's gotta be simpler than most new engines with four cams, four cam phasers, plus the additional hardware becoming more and more common for variable lift.

I have been saying that this is the future for many years, I have heard mercedes experimented with electric valves in the 60's

Camless marine engines have been around for about 15 years. I was fortunate to see one at the B&W factory on the testbed in Copenhagen Denmark. Little 5 cylinder diesel engine making about 20,000 horsepower.

Very cool technology. I am a little surprised they used air and not electromagnetic solenoids. In the construction equipment industry solenoids are taking the place of all mechanical controls. They are infinitely variable and can be fine tuned. This reminds me of the high pressure systems used on Cat C7 and C9 engines. Instead of air it uses high pressure oil controlled by a solenoid the fire the fuel injectors. That could remove the need for an air tank but you would need to run a high pressure oil pump.
This is def the future and I can't wait for it to get here. More power and 20-30% more fuel economy= win.

I have been in the diesel engine industry for most of my life, now. This has been the "Next Evolution" for that entire stretch. Every factory training class I have been to since the early 90s has had some sort of mention of the concept, at one time or another. I truly do want to see it evolve. The possibilities for power and efficiency are amazing.

With modern solenoids and computer controls, we might finally get to see it in action.
