Well as many of you know I recently went to Vegas. It's a long story but we had to fly into Palm Springs and drive there. This did allow me the opportunity to put some great road miles on my rental.
We rented a 2011 Suburban LT with leather interior. It had the 5.3 w/ 6 speed combo. I'm not sure what gear ratio they put in it. I would guess 3.23, but??
I really enjoyed the burb. It had a great ride and was very quiet. It was much quieter then my in-laws LX430 and I preferred the ride of the burb over their big Lexus. Interior room was great. We of course had plenty of room for all of our bags with room to spare. Coming from a LTZ truck I did miss a few of my amenities. Things like turn signal folding mirrors, rain sensing wipers and heated seats. All things that would have been added if I was buying.
Performance- I thought the performance was adequate for a 6000+ lb brick. I feel as if it was adequate for me then the general public will be very happy with it. I think the 6 speed is really responsible for this. The 5.3 engine is great but I think transmission gearing really help it out. I can honestly say AFM in this burb was seamless. I had to watch the DIC to know when in came on. My truck was never that smooth or I would have probably left it and not tuned it out.
I also loved the manual shift for the mountains. It allowed me to keep it in a more ideal gear. It was great.
Mileage - Impressed the shit out of me. I drove the piss out this thing (it's a rental) The entire 290 mile trip to and from Vegas I went 80+ up and down two mountains and around Vegas, I averaged 16.5mpg. I was very impressed. Again, I think the 6 speed is primarily responsible.
Overall, I give it a B+. If it would have been a LTZ it probably would have got an A-. Changing to a little shorter gear I would have given it an even A. I think this is an awesome vehicle for anyone looking for a family hauling beast.
