Unhappy Draining a Radiator on a 2006 Silverado

I need to drain my coolant so I can flush the system and change out my water pump. I've found the drain valve (lower corner on the driver's side). The drain hose was missing so I got a hose. Now I can't figure out how to get the drain valve open. I know it is a petcock type valve. I think there is suppose to be a star like piece that you can twist to open, but all I have is a circle like piece. It looks like something should go inside the circle, as if the star like piece is missing. It is very hard to get a pair of pliers on there, let alone move the pliers. Does anyone have any pictures as to what the drain valve is suppose to look like? Plus do you turn the circle/star piece, or do you turn the whole assembly to where the spout is facing the driver of the truck instead of facing the tire. Thanks for your help.

I'd seriously just pop off the bottom hose over a large drainpan. Those petcocks are a bitch to get open after they have been closed for a while.

I removed the lower radiator hose on mine when I replaced my water pump.
Oh yeah, that water pump is super easy to replace, especially on a 2006 because you don't even have a clutch fan or fanso shroud to remove. You have all the room you need with the electric fans.
