Hi guys been doing some reading and wanted opinions. What are your thoughts on the PCV Oil catch cans. I understand what its going and why BUT is it that much of a help. I think it will help the computer keep as much igntion timing in as possible. The reason being the oil that is sucked in through the PCV won't get there an thus not getting in the combustion chambers. Lack of carbon build-up is a plus. There are alot of these things on the web but the link I have chosen is one of high quality. Yes it gives a brief explanation on what it does and how it works. Opinions appreciated.

Lots of ricers run catch cans. I think most are just there so that they can have another piece of machined aluminum, but they seem to work fine.

Worth a try especially on a higher mileage vehicle.

Its my understanding that the LS1 style engines beneit most from the catch can. Reason being the PCV valve get vacumn from the throttle body thus letting the oil in there and letting it travel through the entire intake. But if the catch can and filter can keep oil out of the combustion chambers and the intake as a whole it can only help.

Yeah I gotta agree with you. Keep that oil mist out and it can only help.

it would certainly keep the crud from building up in your engine, especially higher mileage units, which i could certainly see reducing chances of detonation.

It would work well with your whipple as well. Detonation is definitely something you don't want with a supercharger.

I have a couple of buddies that used to run catch cans on their Whippled '03 Cobras.

I meander over to LS1tech often and catch cans seem to be a norm over there. More so in the FI sections. I would say it can't hurt. :dunno:

Mine has been on there since 2006. Works well. No oil gets in the intake.

What it your new one made from, does it say Kobalt, as in Lowes tools?

Looks like an inline air filter for a compressor to me. Looks to be well installed!

They're both Kobalt from Lowe's, with the metallic filter elements removed and replaced with a/c filter material that is not so prone to clog with oil precipitate. Two 90 degree barbs, 3/8" rubber fuel line and some clamps, and you're in business for around $35, or so. Filter inlet goes toward the PCV opening, and the filter outlet goes toward the intake.

Looks like a clean install big blue. Doesnt look out of place.

Should i put a catch can on my truck? Its got just over 170,000 miles on it. I was thinking of using one of these style breathers..

Bad idea? Should i just use a catch can?

Just one more thing not to worry about with a diesel. :D

The line the catch can inserts in is supposed to be a closed line. Any breather in it would be the same as a vacuum leak.

Just use a catch can, if you do anything.

Here's some:

If i used a breather i would cap off the line that goes to the intake...So no vac leak there...Right?? I mean, the pcv is there to let the crank case vent of gasses. So just a breather should be fine or better?? Then the warm or ''hot'' air wouldnt go to the intake.

What are your guy's thoughts on it?

The 5.3 is just another LS- series engine. Quite common mod on the LS- forums. And it keeps the intake cleaner than if there wasn't one in the line. And it's cute.

Oh, I'm just givin ya crap. I will be putting a catch can on my rig once it gets cammed or supercharged. I just thought it was kinda random, I didn't know guys called things "cute" :D

If you're Big and Blue enough, talking about "cute" things is just another form of intimidation.

Here, kitty, kitty, kitty.
